George and Amal Clooney have been forced to evacuate their home in the south-eastern French town of Brignoles as wildfires – currently four times the size of Paris – tear through parts of the country. The couple are among 200,000 residents and tourists forced to flee.
Clooneys' Letter to Mayor
According to People, the Clooneys wrote a letter to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond addressing the destruction. "Dear Didier, at this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," the letter began. "As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise two things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
The couple's 172-hectare estate, Domaine de Canadel, was purchased in 2021 for around $8.3 million, according to reports. It has become their primary residence, where they live with their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella.
Wider European Wildfire Threat
France is among several countries devastated by wildfires, including Spain, Greece and Portugal. The blazes, fuelled by heatwaves, could soon spread to engulf "all of Europe", the EU's emergency response chief has warned. Speaking to reporters, Ms Zuber said that 2026 could become the biggest fire season in European history, surpassing the record set last year. She said the next few days would be "very difficult" and warned the wildfire threat was shifting eastwards after devastating parts of France and the Iberian Peninsula.
"Italy will face risk at the beginning of August, and we will need to see what will happen with the Iberian Peninsula, because if (it is) there as well, we will have all Europe on fire," she said.
