Brits Warned to Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine in Heatwave

The British Red Cross has warned Brits to avoid two popular drinks during the ongoing heatwave to ensure a good night's sleep. Alcohol and caffeine can both disrupt sleep and increase the risk of dehydration.

Why Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine?

The British Red Cross stated: "Alcohol often goes hand in hand with sunny weather but, it is advised to limit consumption especially in the evening but causes poorer quality of sleep." Caffeinated drinks are diuretics that may encourage the body to lose fluids, risking dehydration and increasing body temperature.

Sleep Recommendations

The NHS recommends adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Inadequate sleep can compromise the immune system, concentration, mental function, and mood, and increase anxiety levels.

Tips for Better Sleep in Hot Weather

The British Red Cross advises sticking to usual eating and bed times, and avoiding daytime naps, as these can disrupt sleep patterns. "Hot weather can often mean your everyday routine goes out the window but, eating and going to bed later may affect the quality of sleep," it said.

Weather Forecast

Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington noted that high pressure has brought above-average temperatures and dry conditions. A weak weather front on Saturday will bring light rain, mainly in the north and west, followed by potentially heavy showers.
