Details of the Earthquake
The magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit inland on Kyushu island at about 4:30 p.m. local time, causing power cuts and damage to buildings. The country's prime minister said rescuers are now in a race against time.
Search for Survivors
BBC correspondent Nick Johnson reported from Kumamoto: "As morning breaks over Kumamoto, the search for survivors among the devastation continues."
