Dog owners have been urged to avoid early morning walks starting this Saturday, as the Met Office warns of high pollen levels across much of the UK next week.
Why Early Morning Walks Are Discouraged
With earlier sunrises and rising temperatures, many pet owners prefer walking their dogs in the early hours to avoid the heat. However, the Met Office advises against this, as pollen counts are expected to be highest during early morning and late evening.
According to the pollen forecast, the Midlands, Wales, South West England, and East England will experience high pollen levels, while London and the South East will see very high counts. By Tuesday, all of England and Wales is expected to have high or very high pollen.
Best Times for Dog Walks
The Met Office recommends walking dogs when pollen is lower, such as before dawn, late afternoon, or early evening. However, these times vary with weather conditions.
Protecting Your Dog from Pollen
Pet owners should keep dogs on a lead near grass to prevent rolling in pollen. After walks, wipe paws and muzzles with sensitive or pet-specific wipes. For sensitive dogs, rinsing with water or shampoo may be necessary—consult a vet for advice.
