New research suggests that increased shipping in the Arctic, made possible by melting ice, is leaving trails of pollutants that promote cloud formation and may accelerate climate change.

Shipping Traffic Up 40% in 12 Years

As Arctic ice gradually recedes, new shipping routes have opened, with marine traffic increasing by about 40% over the past 12 years. All these ships emit aerosol particles in their exhaust, which act as nuclei for water droplets, encouraging cloud formation. Like aircraft, ships can leave contrails in the sky.

Study Examines Arctic Impact

Research by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, published in Environmental Research Letters, explores this effect in the Arctic. In winter, Arctic air is already hazy with industrial pollutants from Europe and Asia, so additional aerosols have little impact. However, in summer, when sea traffic increases, the air is clear, and the study suggests a single vessel can affect cloud formation. This holds true even with low-sulphur fuel, which is considered more environmentally friendly.

Clouds and Radiative Forcing

Cloud cover influences “radiative forcing” – the amount of heat trapped in the atmosphere rather than escaping to space – thereby enhancing the greenhouse effect. Further research is needed to confirm these findings, but early indications suggest that the climate change enabling more Arctic shipping may, in turn, be accelerated by that increase.
