Alan Titchmarsh: Plant This to Attract Birds This Summer

As summer approaches, many UK homeowners are eager to attract a variety of birds to their gardens. Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh has recommended one plant that can help achieve this goal.

Titchmarsh's Top Plant for Birds

In a video on his YouTube channel titled 'How to Transform Your Garden Into a Paradise for Birds!', Titchmarsh highlighted up to seven plants that are welcoming to birds, with one standing out: the beautyberry, or callicarpa. This berry-producing plant is particularly popular with sparrows and robins.

When planted at the rear of a border, it blends quietly into the background before bursting into life in autumn, making a striking addition to any garden.

Other Bird-Friendly Plants

Titchmarsh also recommended firethorn and cotoneaster horizontalis, both of which produce readily accessible berries that birds find irresistible. He emphasized that these plants are meant to provide nourishment for wildlife, and gardeners should feel grateful when birds visit.

He noted: "Don't be cross with birds for nicking your berries, that's half the reason why we plant them really."

Additionally, crab apple trees, especially the Golden Hornet variety, offer a reliable food source and a striking visual feature. This variety produces vibrant yellow fruit and thrives in smaller gardens without dominating the space. Birds are particularly attracted to fruit that has softened after spending time on the tree.

RHS Support

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) supports incorporating fruit-bearing plants for birds, suggesting that shrubs and climbers create an "ideal home" for them. They highlight pyracanthas as arguably the finest choice for nesting.

Elderberries are also beneficial, providing nest sites and attracting many birds with their large crops of berries. However, the RHS advises caution for those in rural areas with vegetable patches, as elderberries can attract wood pigeons, which may become garden pests.
