£7.99 Amazon Item Keeps Bedroom Cool During UK Heatwave, Expert Says
£7.99 Amazon Item Keeps Bedroom Cool During UK Heatwave

As the UK braces for scorching temperatures that could reach 38°C, a British Gas expert has highlighted a simple and affordable solution to keep bedrooms cool at night: reflective window film, available for just £7.99 on Amazon.

How Reflective Window Film Works

Jessica Rawstron, a Smart Energy Engineer at British Gas, explained that the film can reduce heat and glare by up to 99%. "This is an affordable and super effective tool for keeping your house cool in summer by keeping the sun's rays at bay," she said. "It's not very expensive and widely used in hotter climates."

The film also offers additional benefits, including increased privacy without sacrificing natural light and protection for furniture and flooring by blocking harmful UV rays. Rawstron noted that installation is a straightforward DIY project, though professional installation is also an option.

Other Tips to Beat the Heat

Keeping windows and curtains shut during the hottest part of the day is crucial. "Tempting as it might be to throw your windows open during a heatwave, leaving them shut when the day is at its hottest will keep rooms cool in summer," Rawstron advised. She recommended light-coloured blinds and curtains made from heavier fabric for optimal heat blocking.

Fans can also be used more effectively. Rawstron suggested placing a deep dish of ice in front of a fan to create a cooling mist, and pointing a box fan out of an open window in the evening to push hot air out. Additionally, using kitchen and bathroom extractor fans can help create airflow and remove warm air, especially after cooking or showering.

Heatwave Impact and Warnings

The Met Office has warned that temperatures could surpass the record for June, which stands at 35.6°C set in 1976 in Southampton. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned of significant impacts on health and social care services, with a potential rise in deaths among vulnerable groups, particularly those aged 65 and over or with underlying health conditions.

The extreme heat may also disrupt rail, road, and air travel, with the possibility of tarmac melting. The sweltering conditions are expected to last until at least Thursday, prompting weather warnings and concerns for vulnerable people.
