A recent poll has revealed that most people in the UK want to see warnings on packets of ham, bacon, and sausages, similar to those on tobacco and cigarettes. The survey, conducted for The Grocer, found that 55% of respondents would support health warnings on cured meat products.
Health Experts Call for Action
Last year, health experts urged for these warnings alongside other measures, a decade after the World Health Organisation (WHO) classified cured meats as posing a cancer risk comparable to asbestos and tobacco. The Coalition Against Nitrites, citing data from Cancer Research UK and the British Journal of Cancer, reported that over 50,000 people in the UK have developed bowel cancer in the last ten years due to insufficient action following the WHO report.
Public Awareness and Dietary Changes
Among those aware of the health risks, 84% have altered their diets by purchasing less meat, switching to nitrite-free options, or eliminating processed meats entirely. Additionally, 46% expressed support for a ban on nitrites in meat products.
A spokesperson for the Coalition Against Nitrites stated: “When a known carcinogenic chemical is no longer needed in food production, there can be no justification for continuing to use it.”
Official Guidance on Meat Consumption
Ian Young, chief scientific advisor for the Food Standards Agency, commented: “The exact cause of these risks remains unclear, and this is why we fully support the NHS advice that people who eat more than 90g of red or processed meat a day should cut down to no more than 70g. It’s important to understand that choosing nitrite-free processed meat does not remove all of the health risks associated with high consumption of processed meat.”
