Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson has welcomed the news that over 12.8 million free bus journeys have been made by young people in North Lanarkshire since the under 22s bus pass scheme was introduced in early 2022. Across Scotland, the total number of such journeys has exceeded 310 million since the scheme began.
Scheme Benefits and Impact
The free bus travel scheme for under 22s is helping young people across North Lanarkshire access work, education, and further training without charge. No equivalent scheme exists anywhere else in the UK, making it a unique policy.
Commenting on the milestone, Ms Adamson said: “The delivery of almost 13 million free bus journeys for the under 22’s in North Lanarkshire is a fantastic achievement, that demonstrates the SNP Government’s commitment to improving mobility for our youngest citizens here in Motherwell and Wishaw and across the whole country.”
Lifeline for Young People
She added: “These free bus passes are a lifeline for many, helping young people access essential services, education, and employment. While the UK Labour Government is determined to rob young people of opportunities by committing to Brexit and hiking up tuition fees in England, the SNP Government is supporting our young people through the free bus pass.”
Broader Transport Policies
The SNP Government has also permanently scrapped ScotRail peak rail fares, ensuring passengers can travel at the same price throughout the day. This measure helps reduce commuting costs for workers and families alike. The free bus travel scheme for under 22s, along with similar provisions for older people and disabled people, underscores the government's commitment to affordable and accessible public transport across Scotland.
