I love buying quality everyday foods, even if it means splurging a little extra at Marks and Spencer. However, there's one item I'd buy at a more budget-friendly supermarket.
The Taste Test
Grapes are the go-to fruit in my household, and we tend to buy multipacks a week. Due to this grape obsession, I have tried this fruit from every supermarket, and Iceland has remained superior.
To conduct this taste test, I tried both red and white grapes from Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's and Iceland. I ate the grapes when they were room temperature and freshly cold from the fridge to determine which had the better crunch, flavour, juice and visual appeal.
3. Marks and Spencer
For each pack of seedless white and red grapes at M&S, this will set you back £2.50. These grapes are mostly uniform in size, offering a big bite in each one. They are very crunchy both at room temperature and cold from the fridge, with the white grapes having the best crunchiness. However, the flavour and juiciness pale in comparison to those of the other supermarkets. The grapes are quite flavourless and lack the sweetness that makes grapes so moreish and delicious. If I were to shop for grapes at Marks and Spencer, it would be their flavoured grapes selection, including cotton candy grapes and tutti frutti.
2. Sainsbury's
Sainsbury's grapes are slightly cheaper than M&S's, priced at £2 each for both varieties. These grapes are very small and circular, but across all three stores, they offer greater consistency in appearance. Out of all the supermarkets, these Sainsbury's grapes do not offer the best crunch. However, for taste, they beat M&S for being both juicy and sweet. The red grapes were superior to the white in taste, but both could be better. I recommend eating these grapes as cold as possible to maximise their flavour. I would also go for their black sable grapes, which are more delicious than their red and white varieties.
1. Iceland
From taste to texture to price, Iceland offers the perfect all-rounder for fruit. For the mixed packet of grapes, the supermarket charges £2.50, but on Uber Eats, I purchased them for £1.40. The supermarket also offers '25% extra free'. This means customers will receive a larger portion of grapes at the same price. Despite not looking the best visually, as they can sometimes appear bruised or in different sizes, these grapes are extremely delicious. At both temperatures, these grapes offer a nice crunch, but they are best eaten when cold. Both white and red grapes are sweet and super juicy, making them incredibly moreish. The white grapes are a little bit more tart than the red grapes, but are larger and crunchier.
