With winter approaching and temperatures dropping across the UK, gardeners are being urged to protect their plants from frost. Frost damages plants by freezing water inside their cells, causing cell walls to rupture and leading to wilting and discolouration.
Elise Harlock, a floral specialist at Prestige Flowers, has suggested using bubble wrap as a cheap and effective alternative to costly plant fleece. She said: "Only one pound and easy to find, bubble wrap is a perfect solution for you to protect flowers from frost without breaking your bank."
Bubble wrap works by trapping warmth while still letting in light, acting like a mini greenhouse. Simply wrap it around pots or over greenhouse panels and secure with string or pegs. Remove it during the day when temperatures rise.
Bubble wrap is available from eBay for 99p, Amazon for £1.99, and Sainsbury's for £4.75. Old sheets can also be used as an alternative.
