Trump Announces New Federal Support for Farmers During Iran Conflict

President Donald Trump has unveiled a significant aid package for American farmers and food suppliers, introducing new federal loan guarantees and an update to renewable fuel standards. This move comes as the agricultural sector grapples with heightened challenges stemming from the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran, according to a White House announcement made on Friday.

Enhanced Loan Guarantees and Economic Benefits

Following a White House event with farmers, Trump detailed several measures designed to bolster US agriculture. The Small Business Administration (SBA) will administer loans with a 90% federal guarantee, a substantial increase from the previous 75% offered under existing programs. These loans aim to expand food production and supply chains while reducing grocery costs for consumers, with eligibility for certain small businesses starting on 1 May.

In a statement, SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler, a close Trump ally, emphasized that the initiative will "tackle the record-high prices of the Biden Administration." Loeffler added, "The Trump SBA is proud to announce a new Grocery Guarantee that will drive even more investment in our nation’s food supply chain – infusing farmers, ranchers, and logistics providers with expanded access to capital that will increase production, processing and distribution."

Renewable Fuel Standards Update

The update to renewable fuel standards will boost the required volume of homegrown American biofuel. Trump projected that this change will "generate over $10bn of rural economic benefit, create an estimated 100,000 new jobs and massively increase our nation’s energy supply." This measure is part of a broader effort to support rural economies and enhance energy independence.

Farmers Face Mounting Pressures

American farmers have been contending with high production costs for years, but recent weeks have brought additional strain due to the fallout from conflict in the Middle East. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key transport route for crude oil and nitrogen, has led to significant jumps in fertilizer and diesel prices. As farmers enter the spring planting season, many express uncertainty about their ability to remain in business given these escalating costs.

Political Loyalty and Past Support

Farmers have historically been a loyal constituency for Trump, with nearly 80% of farming-dependent counties voting for him in 2024. During his first term, Trump authorized a massive farm bailout after tariffs against China adversely affected American soybean farmers. In December 2025, he signed a similar executive order providing $12bn in aid to farmers.

Challenges to Farmer Loyalty

However, Trump's second-term policies have tested this loyalty for many in the agricultural community. Numerous farmers reported millions in missing funds after the Trump administration withdrew support for US Department of Agriculture programs established under former President Joe Biden. Additionally, some farmers cited that Trump's tariffs and immigration policies have negatively impacted their ability to sustain their businesses, highlighting ongoing tensions within this key voter base.

Trump's latest aid package aims to address these concerns by offering tangible financial support and regulatory adjustments, reinforcing his commitment to the agricultural sector amid global uncertainties.
