Cleaning enthusiasts on social media have shared an unusual product that can help keep shower glass free from watermarks and soap scum: toilet limescale remover. The tip, posted on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, has been praised by members who say it reduces marks significantly.
How the trick works
One woman shared a picture of her gleaming shower screen and explained how her partner discovered the method. She wrote: "I've seen a few posts on here about keeping shower screens watermark-clear. My other half discovered a trick to it last week (don't you hate it when they discover a trick and you don't?!), which is to wipe over a wet shower screen with...toilet limescale remover!"
She added: "I put mine onto a sponge (soft side), wiped it all over the screen and then rinsed it off, then wiped it down with a squeegee. Totally worked, as you can see. Now, this doesn't prevent new watermarks, but it does reduce them significantly, and does offer protection for a few days."
Why it works and what to watch out for
Most marks on shower glass come from white chalky hard water deposits, which explains why a toilet cleaner can help remove them. Brands such as Viakal and Domestos are widely available in supermarkets and bargain stores like The Range and B&M.
However, users are advised to read the label first, as some products may be too harsh for shower glass or surrounding areas. One commenter warned: "Great tip. Don't get it on any silver though it stains."
Alternative methods
Many group members argued that no cleaning products are needed at all – just a squeegee or cloth used consistently. One wrote: "We just squeegee after every shower and it stays clear and shiny."
