More than 5,000 people have signed a petition urging the UK government to introduce a new law prohibiting dog owners from walking their pets when temperatures exceed 25°C, following the country's hottest June day on record and a rare red extreme heat alert from the Met Office.
Petition aims to prevent heat-related suffering
The petition, titled 'Make it illegal to walk dogs during extreme heat to prevent suffering and death', argues that many owners are unaware that dogs cannot regulate their body temperature effectively and can overheat within minutes. It also highlights that hot pavements can cause severe burns to dogs' paws, as when air temperatures reach 25°C, ground temperatures can be significantly higher.
According to the RSPCA, dogs lose heat through panting and can only sweat through their paws, putting them at high risk of heatstroke. The charity advises owners to walk dogs during cooler periods, such as early morning or late evening.
Current petition status and potential impact
The petition will remain open for signatures until October 24 2026. If it reaches 10,000 signatures, the government must respond; at 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament.
The petition states: "We believe this legislation would help prevent unnecessary suffering, raise awareness, and hold owners accountable for avoidable harm."
RSPCA guidance for dog owners
The RSPCA also urges owners not to run or cycle with their dogs in hot weather, and suggests avoiding walking on pavements if the ground is too hot to touch for five seconds.
