Store Potatoes with an Apple to Prevent Sprouting for Months

Potatoes can be kept sprout-free and fresh for months by storing them with an apple, according to waste management experts Wheeldon Brothers. This simple tip, which has gained popularity on social media, works because apples naturally release ethylene gas, which helps regulate the ripening process and slows sprouting in potatoes.

How the Apple Trick Works

Wheeldon Brothers explained: “Storing potatoes with an apple helps prevent sprouting and keeps them fresher for longer. It’s an easy way to reduce waste and make your groceries last.” The experts added: “Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes. For the best results, combine this method with proper storage and keep potatoes in a cool, dark and dry environment.”

Fridge Storage Extends Freshness

Traditionally, people store potatoes in a cupboard or pantry, but keeping them in the fridge can keep them fresh for up to three times longer. The pros noted: “Earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked, and modern research shows that fridge storage is safe.” However, they warned: “It’s important to regularly check potatoes for sprouting or green patches, as these can contain harmful toxins. Sprouted or green potatoes should not be eaten.”

Additional Storage Tips

Another way to store potatoes is to remove any plastic bags they came in, as these can trap moisture and speed up spoilage. Potatoes should be kept in a cool, dark, and dry environment to maintain their quality.

Banana Storage Advice

Similarly, bananas ripen quickly and can be kept fresher by separating the fruit from the cluster and wrapping the stems in plastic wrap or cling film. This reduces the amount of gas that travels through the fruit, helping it stay fresher for longer. The fridge is also a great location for bananas at peak ripeness, as they can last much longer when placed there.
