As summer draws to a close, households across the UK are bracing themselves for the inevitable arrival of spiders. The eight-legged visitors become far more common at this time of year, much to the dismay of arachnophobes everywhere.
Nobody wants to discover spiders or dust mites lurking in their bed, which could lead to an unwelcome shock when pulling back the duvet. Dust mites can trigger symptoms including skin rashes or allergy-like reactions, but their microscopic size makes them particularly difficult to tackle.
However, one cleaning guru has revealed a straightforward method for eliminating both pests using just two simple ingredients.
The Two-Ingredient Spray
Lifestyle influencer Chantel Mila, who has amassed over 1.7 million followers on TikTok, claims you can effectively keep spiders and dust mites away from your bedroom - and crucially, your bed - by creating a straightforward spray with only two components.
In a recent clip, she shared: "This mix is my go-to to leave your room bug-free and smelling amazing." Better still, it requires just two common household items you're likely to have already - white vinegar and essential oil, reports the Express.
How to Keep Spiders and Dust Mites Out of Your Bed
Start by taking a spray bottle and filling it with one cup of water. Next, pour in half a cup of white vinegar, followed by a few drops of either lavender or peppermint essential oil. Whether you rely on it for a peaceful night's sleep or have previously deployed it against other unwanted visitors, these oils prove incredibly useful to keep at home.
Give the mixture a good shake to blend, then spritz it across your bed or any spots where you're concerned about encountering spiders. Chantel explained: "This powerful mix can be used on your mattress, bedhead and bedsides to repel spiders and dust."
Why It Works
Spiders are believed to despise the potent acidic scent of white vinegar, though when diluted with water, you can still apply it around your sleeping area without leaving an unpleasant odour lingering. The essential oils function similarly, with numerous other nuisances - including rats, mice and flies - equally repelled by the aroma of peppermint.
Beyond these two ingredients, spiders reportedly aren't keen on cinnamon either. By sprinkling this aromatic spice along window ledges and doorways, it establishes a deterrent for spiders, making them far less inclined to venture indoors seeking warmth and mating opportunities.
