Prevent wardrobe mould with rice and lemon oil hack

Cleaning expert and TikToker Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila, has shared a simple method to prevent mould growth in wardrobes using just two kitchen items: uncooked rice and lemon oil. The hack is designed for those without a dehumidifier, as the combination helps absorb excess moisture before it can turn into mould.

The Two-Item Solution

In her latest video, Chantel recommended placing uncooked rice inside a fabric drawstring bag along with a small amount of lemon oil. Rice acts as a natural desiccant, extracting moisture from the air or nearby materials, while the lemon oil helps keep the wardrobe smelling fresh. She described the method as a hack everyone should know about but "no one ever teaches you."

Why Wardrobes Are Vulnerable

Wardrobes provide ideal conditions for mould due to a combination of dampness, poor air circulation, and organic materials. Mould typically appears in humid environments where moisture condenses on cool surfaces, and wet garments can become breeding grounds for spores, allowing mould to spread onto clothing, walls, and shelves.

Expert Advice on Humidity Levels

Tim Warren, a DIY specialist from Adkwik, told Ideal Home that humidity levels in wardrobes should ideally be maintained between 40 and 60%. While he suggested a dehumidifier as the most efficient option, he noted that desiccants are a practical alternative. He said: "Placing these in your wardrobe can help to keep the air dry, reducing the risk of mould growth. You can also buy artificial moisture-absorbing desiccants, such as silica gel packets or charcoal bags."
