Households Urged to Pour Milk in Garden in June to Fight Plant Diseases
Pour Milk in Garden in June to Fight Plant Diseases

Households are being urged not to pour leftover or gone-off milk down the drain, but instead to use it in the garden to fight common plant diseases. The advice comes from Scottish Water, which warns that milk can cause serious problems for drains, block pipes, and harm the environment.

Milk as a Natural Fertiliser

According to household advice website The Spruce and domestic expert Martha Stewart, milk is a great natural fertiliser for gardens and has anti-fungal properties that can fight certain infections affecting plants. Blight is a common problem in summer and early autumn, particularly for potatoes and tomatoes during their crucial growth period.

How to Use Milk in the Garden

The Spruce recommends mixing milk with water in a 50-50 ratio and applying it to leaves or directly into the soil. After about half an hour, check that the milk has been absorbed and wipe off any excess with a wet cloth to prevent fungal problems on tomatoes. Any type of milk—fresh, expired, evaporated, or powdered—can be used, but reduced-fat or low-fat options are preferred over whole milk.

Martha Stewart adds that many gardeners have found milk valuable for fertilising plants, addressing fungal issues, and acting as a natural pesticide. Garden vegetables, in particular, thrive with a diluted milk application, and houseplants also benefit.

Important Tips

  • Always dilute milk with water in a 50-50 ratio to avoid damaging plants.
  • Do not use chemical products on leaves after applying milk, as this will kill the beneficial bacteria.
  • Remove excess milk from leaves to prevent fungal growth.

By following these steps, households can turn a waste product into a valuable garden aid while protecting their drains and the environment.
