Newport Man Uses Crypto to Build Farm in Spain, Leaves Past Behind
Newport Man Uses Crypto to Build Farm in Spain

Lucas Ruiz, a 30-year-old from Pill, Newport, has turned his life around after a fortunate cryptocurrency investment enabled him to purchase a plot of land in Spain near the Portuguese border. He is now building a small farm with the aim of supporting the local community.

From Council Estate to Spanish Farm

Ruiz grew up on a council estate in Newport, experienced a troubled childhood, and by age 17 was selling drugs. He served three years in prison after being sentenced to six years at 19. Upon release, he struggled with low-paid, long-hour jobs in traffic management, and rising rents made life in the UK unsustainable.

In 2024, he invested £5,000 in cryptocurrency just before the US election, and the value surged to £55,000. He used the profits to buy the land for £5,000, fulfilling his dream of owning a farm in the sun.

Building a Community Farm

Ruiz has spent eight months transforming the non-arable land into a usable farm. He plans to keep chickens and ducks for eggs, avoiding animal slaughter, and aims to grow vegetables once a water supply is installed. He hopes to provide affordable produce to local residents and businesses, such as cafes.

Despite initial distrust from locals due to tourism-driven displacement, Ruiz is meeting with the town's mayor to discuss his project. He documents his journey on Instagram (@UKtoSpainfarmm) to inspire others.

A New Lifestyle

Ruiz emphasizes the mental health benefits of his new life, contrasting the Spanish siesta culture with the UK's demanding work environment. He says, "Everyone raps about gangs and knives, but why not rap about farms and sun?" He believes if he can change his life, anyone can.
