If you're searching for a natural and affordable solution to patio weeds, look no further, as this tip could clear your patio in just three days. Weeds are a persistent headache for gardeners across the country. Whether you're trying to eradicate dandelions from your borders or fighting off chickweed and clover creeping through your patio cracks, chances are you've tried numerous approaches.
The Salt Trick
If you've scoured the web for a swift and cost-effective remedy, you may have come across the widely-discussed salt trick that claims to banish weeds rapidly. Sodium chloride, better known as table salt, is a powerful and natural method for tackling stubborn weeds in your garden. While it needs to be applied with caution to prevent damage to wanted plants, eco-friendly cleaning and gardening influencer Nancy Birtwhistle has revealed how to kill weeds with salt and boiling water.
How It Works
Showcasing all the fresh growth in her greenhouse on her Instagram page, Nancy highlighted the challenge of dandelion weeds sprouting between her paving blocks. Discussing the weeds, Nancy said, "I'm going to get rid of these, and we can do it naturally." She urged, "Don't go out buying path clear and spot weed killer – those things are so toxic and costly. We can do it effectively, cheaply and safely."
To eliminate the weeds, Nancy begins by pouring boiling water from the kettle over the weeds before sprinkling "just a tiny bit of salt" across them. Nancy then revisited the weeds "three days later", and the dandelion weeds were completely dead. She noted that "they'll not be back this season".
Why Salt Works
Salt eliminates weeds by dehydrating them and disrupting the water balance within the plant's cells. As salt is water-soluble, it works most efficiently when diluted with water, making it far easier for the weeds to absorb.
Reactions from Followers
Flocking to the comments section beneath the video, her followers were quick to share their views on the hack, with one describing it as "life-changing". One user wrote: "I watched this reel last year, and omg, I'm so grateful; I did my drive and patio. They are looking so clear! The amount of time and money I spent on harmful path and patio weed killers over the years, and I've noticed they don't grow back now with salt."
Another commented: "Used brown rock salt on our gravel drive – the weeds have disappeared overnight." A third said: "This works 100%! Brilliant, thanks Nancy!" A fourth noted: "I've been doing this for years too, and it works really well." One user even found success using boiling water alone, saying: "I tried this just with boiling water on some persistent grass weeds that were growing (I forgot the salt!), but the boiling water worked just as well."
