Japanese maples, prized for their vibrant red foliage, are a popular choice in UK gardens but require careful summer care. Gardening experts warn that fertilising in late June can harm the trees, as the salts and chemicals in fertiliser scorch both roots and leaves during hot weather. Instead, mulching is the natural solution to keep them bushy and healthy.
Why Mulching Beats Fertilising in Summer
According to Mendocino Maples Nursery, the latest safe time to fertilise a Japanese maple is early May. In summer, mulching is far more effective. The experts explain: "Mulch is a good friend of your maple. Mulch protects the roots from the heat in summer, the cold in winter and reduces the frequency of watering."
Japanese maples have shallow roots that dry out quickly, unlike many other plants. In their native woodland habitats in Japan, forest floors are covered with leaf debris that retains water and shields roots from the sun. Mulching mimics this natural environment.
Benefits of Mulching for Japanese Maples
Mulching involves covering the soil around a plant with organic matter. In summer, it acts as insulation, keeping roots cool and helping soil retain moisture. This prevents the tree from becoming stressed and ensures it continues to display stunning foliage throughout the season. Natural mulches also gradually break down, enriching the soil and promoting fuller, bushier growth without the need for fertiliser.
How to Mulch a Japanese Maple
To mulch your Japanese maple, start by purchasing suitable mulch from a garden centre. Wood chips or pine needles are ideal because they replicate woodland soil conditions. Clear the area around the tree's base of weeds and debris to help the mulch settle into the soil.
Spread the mulch in a circle around the tree, ensuring it does not touch the trunk. Mulch holds water, and direct contact with the trunk can trap moisture and cause bark rot. Aim for a depth of five to eight centimetres, evenly distributed. After applying, water the mulch thoroughly.
Your Japanese maple should remain cool and healthy for the rest of the summer, with vibrant foliage that adds beauty to your garden.
