Gardeners Urged to Keep Banana Peels and Soak Them in Water Immediately

A viral gardening hack is encouraging people to repurpose banana peels as plant fertiliser. Lifestyle influencer mama_peyy shared the tip on TikTok, explaining that banana peels are rich in potassium and other nutrients essential for plant growth.

Instead of discarding the peels, she advises soaking them in water for at least 24 hours to create a nutrient-rich solution. The resulting banana water can then be poured onto soil to give plants a boost. The video has garnered over a million views, with many viewers praising the simple and effective method.

However, caution is advised for indoor plants. One TikTok user warned that using banana water indoors can attract fruit flies, leading to infestations that may require discarding plants. The hack is best suited for outdoor gardens.

For the leftover peels, they can be buried directly in garden beds or added to a compost pile, where they break down into potassium-rich fertiliser. Other food scraps like coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, and even pet hair can also benefit soil when composted first.
