Roses are especially vulnerable in autumn when rainy weather encourages the spread of black spot, a fungal disease that can weaken plants before winter. A simple spray made from one part milk and two parts water, applied once a week, controls the disease as well as synthetic fungicides.
Why Autumn Is Critical for Roses
October often leaves roses looking worn and brown, and many gardeners let them wilt as temperatures drop. However, autumn is one of the most important times to monitor the plants. Rainy conditions create the ideal environment for black spot to spread, quickly sapping the plant's energy and weakening it considerably.
Black spot is most harmful right before winter. It causes roses to lose their leaves and reduces the energy they can store before going dormant. An infected rose will struggle to produce flowers the following spring, and because the disease can survive in the soil, it is likely to keep returning and harming the plant.
The Milk Spray Solution
Kevin Lee Jacobs, a gardener and founder of A Garden for the House, shared that he cleared up black spot on his roses by spraying them with milk. He said: "One part milk and two parts water is the best answer to the disease. When applied weekly, the solution controls black spot as well as any synthetic fungicide, including Chlorotalonil."
According to Kevin, this method "really works" as he sprayed his roses with a full-fat milk solution once a week and found it the best way to keep his roses disease-free. Milk contains proteins such as lactoferrin, which have antimicrobial properties that can prevent fungus in rose diseases like black spot from spreading.
How to Apply and Prevent Black Spot
To make the solution, mix one part milk and two parts water in a sprayer, then wet both the top and bottom of the leaves. It is one of the cheapest, easiest and most natural ways to stop black spot, and worth trying if you are worried about the disease taking over your roses.
Spray the roses consistently once a week to keep them healthy and ensure plenty of blooms next spring. However, the most efficient way to stop black spot is to check roses regularly, as any method works better the earlier the disease is caught.
Black spot gets its name because it first appears as dark blotchy circles around the rose leaves, and it can also make them look yellow. It then causes roses to lose their leaves, so it is important to pick up any rotting leaves; otherwise, the spores will splash back onto the plant when it rains again. Taking a few minutes once a week to inspect the plants, remove dead leaves from the ground and spray them when needed will keep roses as healthy as possible in autumn.
