A former pirate hideout has been transformed into a 'magical' stop-off perfect for a family day out. Boggle Hole, located in Whitby, North Yorkshire, is being hailed as a 'best kept secret' destination with a rich history and stunning coastal views.
Historic Pirate Connections
Just a mile from Robin Hood's Bay, Boggle Hole was once used by pirates and smugglers in the 1800s to conceal contraband such as gin and tobacco. The Hotel Victoria, which opened in 1897, features a timeline noting that 'much of the village took part in the trade. Stories say fishing boats doubled as smuggling vessels. Boggle Hole cave supposedly hid contraband.'
Family-Friendly Attractions
Today, the area serves as a wonderful hostel with an on-site café. Visitors can explore the Jurassic coastline, search for fossils, and enjoy the beautiful sea. One glowing TripAdvisor review described it as the 'best kept secret of North Yorkshire,' adding: 'If you want unspoilt views with no distractions, this is the coast for you. When the tide's out you can walk to Robin Hood's Bay. The coast is Jurassic, so expect to see lots of kids/adults looking for fossils. You can spend the whole day in the sea - the water is beautiful. Just check the tide times, so you aren’t disappointed when you turn up. I really can't extol the virtues of this place.'
Another visitor shared: 'What a delight. We went to find Boggle Hole due to the unusual name. Parked in the free area and walked 300yds down the steep slope.' A third added: 'We did the walk along the cliff then back to Robin Hood’s Bay along the beach. Stopped for coffee at the YHA cafe and had the most amazing carrot cake. Our four year old was really taken with the story of the Boggle.'
