Lidl Strawberries Win Taste Test Against M&S, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Morrisons
Lidl Strawberries Win Supermarket Taste Test

With temperatures climbing and Wimbledon on the horizon, there is no finer moment to indulge in one of Britain's classic summer indulgences: strawberries and cream. The tennis tournament and strawberry season are inseparable, but with food costs still weighing heavily on many families, Reach's Aditi Rane set out to discover which supermarket delivers the best bang for your buck.

To find out, Aditi grabbed punnets of strawberries from M&S, Waitrose, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, assessing flavour, texture, looks and cost. Aditi anticipated one of the upmarket retailers would take the crown. However, it was the most affordable punnet of the bunch that emerged victorious.

Morrisons - 3/10 (£2.50, 250g)

The biggest letdown of the lot. At first sight, Morrisons' strawberries appeared almost impossibly perfect. Each berry seemed flawlessly formed and vibrantly red. Sadly, the flavour fell well short of the presentation. They tasted somewhat synthetic, more like strawberry confectionery than genuine summer produce. Despite their picture-postcard appearance, they were missing the authentic sweetness and freshness she had anticipated. Priced at £2.50 for a 250g punnet, they were also amongst the priciest by weight, rendering them poor value against multiple competitors.

Sainsbury's - 5/10 (£1.83, 250g)

Sainsbury's provided the second-lowest price tag after Lidl, though the strawberries themselves proved rather unremarkable. They were not unpleasant by any stretch, but they did not quite deliver the sweetness and juiciness found in the top performers. The taste seemed somewhat subdued and unmemorable. Priced at £1.83 for 250g, they might appeal to those watching the pennies, but they failed to make much of an impression against stronger competition.

M&S - 7/10 (£2.50, 300g)

M&S strawberries were decent, though nothing to write home about. They had an attractive appearance and tasted fresh enough, but Aditi felt they were not quite as sweet as the Lidl and Waitrose versions. Some fruit impressed while others fell a bit flat. At £2.50 for a smaller 300g punnet, they also turned out pricier per gram than various competitors, which dragged down their value rating.

Waitrose - 8/10 (£2.70, 400g)

Waitrose produced precisely what you would anticipate from an upmarket grocer. The fruit was uniformly sized, visually appealing and had a nice sweetness about it. They were succulent and pleasant to consume, though they lacked the same flavour intensity as Lidl's version. At £2.70 for 400g, they remain fairly priced and offer reasonable value, but could not entirely warrant the premium compared with the overall champion.

Lidl - 10/10 (£2.15, 400g)

The undisputed champion. Lidl's strawberries were markedly larger than their rivals and appeared fresh without looking unnaturally flawless. Most crucially, they tasted superb. Bursting with flavour, these strawberries struck the ideal balance between sweetness and freshness, with a satisfyingly juicy bite. Their firm texture meant they held up perfectly beneath a generous dollop of cream, making them an absolute must for a classic Wimbledon-style treat. At just £2.15 for a 400g punnet, they also ranked amongst the best value options in the test. For anyone picking up strawberries for a family get-together or a summer picnic, these would be the undisputed top pick.

It might come as a surprise, but rather than a premium supermarket taking the top spot, it was Lidl's strawberries that stole the show as the standout winner. Not only did they come out on top for sweetness and juiciness, but they were also the most affordable of the larger punnets put to the test. At a time when many shoppers are tightening their belts, these prove that splashing out more does not always mean getting something better. So if you are planning to indulge in strawberries and cream this Wimbledon season, Lidl's punnet is the one that deserves a place in your shopping basket.
