Lidl Beats M&S and Waitrose in Strawberry Taste Test with Perfect Score
Lidl Strawberries Beat M&S and Waitrose in Taste Test

With temperatures climbing and Wimbledon fast approaching, there's no finer moment to indulge in one of Britain's most beloved summer delights: strawberries and cream. The tennis championships and strawberry season are intrinsically linked, but with food costs remaining a worry for many households, Reach's Aditi Rane was keen to discover which supermarket delivers the best value for money.

To put them through their paces, Aditi purchased punnets of strawberries from M&S, Waitrose, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, assessing taste, texture, appearance and price. Aditi anticipated one of the premium supermarkets would emerge victorious. Instead, it was the most affordable punnet of the bunch that proved the winner.

Morrisons - 3/10 (£2.50, 250g)

The greatest letdown of the test. At first glance, Morrisons' strawberries appeared almost too perfect to be genuine. Every berry seemed flawlessly shaped and vibrantly coloured. Regrettably, the taste failed to match the appearance. They possessed an artificial flavour that felt more evocative of strawberry confectionery than fresh summer fruit. Despite their picture-perfect appearance, they were missing the natural sweetness and freshness I'd been anticipating. At £2.50 for a 250g punnet, they were also amongst the priciest on a weight basis, rendering them poor value when compared with several competitors.

Sainsbury's - 5/10 (£1.83, 250g)

Sainsbury's provided the lowest headline price after Lidl, but the strawberries themselves were reasonably average. They weren't disagreeable in any way, but they were lacking in the sweetness and juiciness found in the higher-placed options. The taste seemed somewhat subdued and unmemorable. At £1.83 for 250g, they might appeal to customers seeking a budget-friendly choice, but they failed to distinguish themselves in a competitive market.

M&S - 7/10 (£2.50, 300g)

M&S strawberries were solid, but not outstanding. They appeared attractive and possessed a fresh taste, but Aditi discovered them marginally less sweet than the Lidl and Waitrose options. Some berries were superb while others seemed somewhat disappointing. At £2.50 for a smaller 300g punnet, they also proved more costly per gram than numerous competitors, which impacted their value-for-money rating.

Waitrose - 8/10 (£2.70, 400g)

Waitrose provided precisely what you'd anticipate from a premium supermarket. The berries were uniformly sized, attractive and possessed a pleasing sweetness. They were succulent and satisfying to eat, though they didn't quite possess the same richness of flavour as Lidl's product. At £2.70 for 400g, they remain fairly priced and offer reasonable value, but they couldn't entirely warrant the elevated price when measured against the overall champion.

Lidl - 10/10 (£2.15, 400g)

The undisputed winner. Lidl's strawberries were markedly larger than the others and appeared fresh without seeming artificially flawless. Most crucially, they tasted superb. Bursting with juice and sweetness, these strawberries were packed with flavour, striking an ideal balance between sugary richness and freshness. Their texture was sufficiently firm to withstand a generous dollop of cream, making them perfectly suited to a classic Wimbledon-style dessert. Priced at just £2.15 for a 400g punnet, they also represented outstanding value amongst those tested. For anyone purchasing strawberries for a family gathering or summer picnic, these would be the undisputed first choice.

While a premium supermarket might have been expected to take the top spot, it was Lidl's strawberries that emerged as the clear winner. Not only were they the sweetest and most succulent of the entire selection, but they also came in as the most affordable of the larger punnets assessed. At a time when many shoppers are seeking to make their money go further, they demonstrate that a higher price tag doesn't necessarily guarantee a superior product. For those planning to indulge in strawberries and cream throughout the Wimbledon season, Lidl's punnet is the one worth dropping into your shopping basket.
