Parents across Lanarkshire are being reminded to check if they qualify for additional financial support to cover the cost of school meals during the summer holidays, as the break approaches. National advice agency Advice Direct Scotland, which operates the advice service advice.scot, is urging families to explore their eligibility before schools close for the summer.
Households that normally receive non-universal free school meals during term time should automatically receive payments of between approximately £2.35 and £3 per day, per child, during the holidays. The exact amount depends on the child's age and the local council area. While holiday dates vary by council, a household with two children could be entitled to between around £140 and £192 over the entire summer break.
Eligibility and Application Process
All children in Primary 1 to Primary 5 attending council-run schools currently receive free school lunches during term time, regardless of their family's financial situation. However, children in Primary 6 and above qualify only if they come from low-income households. During the summer and other school holidays, support is available to those in low-income households who normally receive free school meals.
Payments vary by council, with some local authorities paying a set amount per child for each weekday during the holidays, while others provide a lump sum payment or voucher. Some councils offer higher rates of £3 per day per pupil, totalling £96 across the summer break, while others have differing rates for primary and secondary pupils.
To qualify, applicants must be in receipt of one of the following benefits: Universal Credit, Income Support, Income-based Job Seeker's Allowance, or Income-based Employment and Support Allowance. People who are not currently eligible but start receiving one of these benefits during the summer holidays can apply for the extra support immediately.

Rebecca Fagan, policy executive at Advice Direct Scotland, said: “The summer holidays are fast approaching, so it’s vital for families to know about the support available to help provide healthy meals for their children. Many Scots are facing financial troubles due to the cost-of-living and energy crises and will be worried about holiday-related expenses on top of rising bills. Payments are available throughout the summer for families with children eligible for free school meals, so we encourage anyone who might benefit to apply now. Remember, payments will start promptly once your application is approved, and will also be available during other school holidays. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, or need help applying, our team at advice.scot offers free, confidential support to everyone, regardless of personal circumstances.”
