Weeding is one of the most tedious and physically demanding tasks in garden upkeep. Constant bending, kneeling, and tugging can lead to back pain, sore knees, and wrist strain, particularly for older gardeners.
If you do not remove the entire root system, weeds often reappear within days. Chemical weed killers should be avoided as they can be both costly and damaging to the environment.
While removing them by hand might seem like the only choice, there is a natural alternative that is both effective and environmentally friendly—and you likely already have it in your cupboard.
Lemon Juice as a Natural Weed Killer
Lemon juice, thanks to its natural acidity, can act as a powerful weed killer that works without needing harsh chemicals or continuous manual labour. When applied directly, it dries out the weeds and causes them to die off, making it a perfect solution for patios, pathways, and gravel areas.
Gardeners' World.com has revealed two recipes for homemade weed killers—one using lemon juice, the other using salt. While these homemade solutions may not be as immediately effective as their chemical counterparts, they are considerably better for your garden and the environment.
How to Use Lemon Juice
To make your own, you will need the juice of five lemons. If that sounds like excessive effort, bottled lemon juice works as well. Simply pour the juice into a spray bottle and aim at your weeds. Make sure you apply it on a dry day, as rainfall could rinse it away.
Salt Solution for Weeds
Gardeners' World advises using the solution exclusively on unwanted vegetation growing on hard surfaces to prevent any damage to healthy soil. The formula itself is simple: mix one part table salt with two to three parts water, making sure to use ordinary table salt rather than rock, sea, or Epsom salts.
Referred to by the site as cheap and easy, the saline solution will eventually eradicate weeds for good.
