Wasps can be a nuisance during summer gatherings, but a simple and inexpensive natural deterrent might be closer than you think. Cucumber peels, often destined for the bin, could help keep these insects at bay, according to DIY specialist Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades Multi Tools.
How Cucumber Peels Deter Wasps
The method relies on wasps' aversion to the scent of cucumber peelings. Peskett explained: "Every summer, people seem to have a different trick for keeping wasps away, and cucumber peels are one that comes up quite a lot. The thinking is that wasps aren't too keen on the smell from the peel."
While not a miracle solution, particularly if a nest is nearby, some people find it reduces wasps hanging around outdoor seating areas. Placing several fresh cucumber peelings around patios, garden tables, or other wasp-prone spots can help. The peels should be replaced periodically once they dry out.
Cost-Effective and Easy to Use
A cucumber costs just 99p from Tesco, 69p from Aldi, or 70p from Sainsbury's, making it an affordable option. If cucumber peel alone proves ineffective, it can be combined with other established deterrent methods.
Peskett emphasised: "People often look for quick fixes, but the biggest thing is keeping food, drinks and rubbish under control. That's what usually attracts wasps in the first place. The cucumber peel trick is just a simple extra that some people swear by."
Additional Tips to Keep Wasps at Bay
- Keep sugary drinks covered when outside
- Clear away food scraps as soon as possible
- Wipe down outdoor tables after use
- Ensure bins and recycling containers remain closed
- Avoid leaving sweet foods exposed for long periods
While it may not deter every wasp, for cucumber peels that would otherwise be discarded, it's a simple method worth trying this summer.
