Potatoes rank among the most versatile ingredients, enjoyed mashed, fried, baked, boiled, and in countless other ways. Yet this adaptability also makes them one of Britain's most frequently discarded foods, despite their naturally long shelf life. Sprouting and developing a green tinge are typical issues if potatoes are not consumed within a fortnight.
Simple Storage Tip with an Apple
Wheeldon Brothers, waste management specialists, revealed a straightforward tip to maintain potato freshness for "months." They stated: "Storing potatoes with an apple helps prevent sprouting and keeps them fresher for longer. It's an easy way to reduce waste and make your groceries last."
The technique works because apples naturally emit ethylene gas. The specialists added: "Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes. For the best results, combine this method with proper storage and keep potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry environment."
Refrigeration Extends Freshness
Conventionally, most people store potatoes in a cupboard or pantry. However, placing them in the fridge provides another way to extend their freshness, potentially maintaining quality for "up to three times longer." The professionals noted: "Earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked, and modern research shows that fridge storage is safe."
It is important to regularly check potatoes for sprouting or green patches, as these can contain harmful toxins. Sprouted or green potatoes should not be eaten. To keep potatoes in top condition, store them properly and check for any signs of spoilage.
Additional Tips for Potato Storage
Another useful tip is to remove any plastic bags that the vegetables were packaged in, as these tend to trap moisture and accelerate deterioration. Bananas are another fruit that perishes quickly, ripening and browning within days of purchase. A food hygiene specialist at High Speed Training advises that bananas should be kept neither in a fruit bowl nor in a plastic bag. Instead, pull the fruit apart from the bunch and wrap the stems tightly in cling film or plastic wrap. This limits the amount of gas that passes through the fruit, helping it remain fresher for longer. Placing them in the fridge is also highly recommended, as bananas kept there at peak ripeness can last considerably longer.
