Dogs bring endless joy and affection to our lives, and pet owners overwhelmingly agree their furry friends have enriched their lives in numerous ways. Each dog possesses a distinct personality, though, and occasionally behavioral traits are influenced by a dog's breed and genetic makeup.
Fussiest Dog Breeds Revealed
A recent survey by dog food manufacturer Forthglade has revealed which breeds feature among the most particular when it comes to food, supported by expert analysis from a prominent animal behaviorist. Discussing some indicators pointing to fussiness in dogs and the underlying significance behind these behaviors, the animal expert has illuminated why certain breeds are more selective or hesitant when consuming their food—and the explanation is considerably more complex than one might imagine.
Caroline Wilkinson, in-house expert and animal behaviorist at Forthglade, shares: "Picky eating is an issue that owners can feel frustrated by, but it's far more common than people realize, and it's rarely about stubbornness. Dogs rarely choose not to eat to be difficult; rather than viewing their behaviors as stubborn or fussy, it can be more helpful to ask what they're communicating."
"In most cases, there's an underlying reason why your dog might appear reluctant around food, whether it's a breed trait, sensitivity to a certain texture or aroma, or something as simple as the location of their food bowl. Working out the underlying issue and making some considered changes to overcome it is usually the first step towards making mealtimes easier."
Top Fussy Breeds
- Poodles lead the rankings as the fussiest dog breed, securing a flawless score of 10 out of 10. The breed garnered 82 mentions throughout relevant Reddit discussions, with 20 being direct references to them being selective eaters, cementing their position at the top. For those acquainted with the breed, this elevated ranking might not come as much of a shock, as they are celebrated for being clever and lively dogs that generally display reduced interest in food. Poodles accounted for 6% of responses in Forthglade's survey.
- Yorkshire Terriers took second place with a score of 9.1. A breed whose compact size evidently comes with firm preferences about food, Yorkshire Terriers appeared in 12 specific references to fussy eating habits out of 29 total mentions. Yorkies actually have a reduced sense of smell compared to the typical dog, meaning food may struggle to entice them unless there is an especially strong or unique scent to grab their attention.
- Chihuahuas secured third position with a rating of 7.6, garnering 77 mentions. They have earned a standing among owners for being extraordinarily particular about texture and flavor. As a breed, they are especially discriminating regarding texture and taste, and they generally thrive on variety—so when mealtimes turn repetitive or dull, their refusal to eat is frequently their way of communicating displeasure.
- Cavapoos just fell short of the top three, recording a rating of 7.2. As the first Poodle crossbreed to feature in the top 10, their placement strongly indicates their pickiness may indeed be a hereditary trait. While Cavapoos accounted for merely 3% of responses in Forthglade's survey, Reddit users clearly found them significantly more difficult to feed.
- Labradors and Bichon Frises round off the top five, sharing matching ratings of 7 out of 10. These two vastly contrasting breeds can display strikingly different approaches towards food. Labradors' high ranking might surprise some owners, especially considering the breed's well-documented appetite, but with considerable total mentions and 17 comments explicitly highlighting finicky eating behaviors, the data tells a somewhat different story. Labradors also accounted for 6% of responses in Forthglade's customer survey. For those who own Bichon Frises, this ranking probably won't come as much of a shock. These dogs flourish when there is variety in their meals and are especially driven by scent, which means food with a weaker aroma may simply not be enticing enough for them.
Other Breeds in Top 10
Bernedoodles and Cockapoos also made it into the top 10. Continuing the pattern of Poodle crossbreeds showing fussy tendencies, Bernedoodles are known for tiring of the same routine quickly, which suggests their pickiness might be less about the food itself and more about a desire for something different. Cockapoos, on the other hand, tell quite a different tale—clocking up 19 mentions across relevant Reddit discussions and accounting for 21% of all responses in Forthglade's survey, cementing their reputation as among the fussiest eaters identified in the study.
