Four fragrant plants to transform your garden this summer

A gardening expert says fragrance is one of the most overlooked ways to make your outdoor space feel more relaxing and inviting.

Scent is often overlooked when it comes to garden planning, but warmer weather is on its way, making it the perfect opportunity to head outside and transform your garden ahead of summer picnics and parties. When people consider improving their outdoor space, they frequently think about replacing furniture or planting vibrant new flowerbeds. Yet one crucial element is often neglected.

Few things are as tranquil as sitting in the garden on a balmy summer evening, breathing in the sweet fragrance of flowers drifting through the air. From lavender to honeysuckle, Britain boasts an abundance of beautifully scented plants that can elevate your garden from pleasant to truly spectacular.

Jo McGarry, gardening expert at Caragh Nurseries, said the right plants can make your garden far more unforgettable. She said: "People naturally focus on colour because it's the first thing they notice. But some of the most memorable gardens aren't necessarily the brightest or the most expensive. They're the ones where you step outside and immediately notice a beautiful scent in the air."

"Fragrance has a way of completely changing how a space feels. It can make a garden seem more relaxing, more inviting and somewhere you genuinely want to spend time."

Lavender

One of Britain's most beloved garden plants, and with good reason, lavender is celebrated for both its distinctive fragrance and its remarkable ability to attract bees and other pollinators. Its stunning purple blooms provide striking visual appeal, while its soothing scent lends genuine charm. It's also remarkably low-maintenance. Jo said: "If someone asked me to recommend one plant for fragrance, lavender would be right near the top of the list. It looks fantastic, it's relatively easy to care for and on a warm summer day the scent can drift right across the garden."

Sweet Peas

These stunning blooms are cherished for their vibrant colours, but they also boast an instantly recognisable fragrance. Jo said: "The scent of sweet peas instantly reminds people of summer. They're brilliant near patios, seating areas and pathways where you can really appreciate the fragrance as you walk past."

Jasmine

Jasmine is a gorgeous climbing vine that produces delicate white flowers with a powerful scent. The fragrance becomes even more pronounced as evening falls, making it an iconic summer bloom. Jo said: "There's something lovely about sitting outside on a warm evening and catching that fragrance on the breeze."

Honeysuckle

The sweet smell of honeysuckle will be familiar to anyone living in the UK. Its honeyed perfume travels surprisingly far and can evoke an immediate sense of nostalgia. Jo said: "It's also a fantastic climber and the fragrance can make a garden feel established and full of character."
