Roses and tomato plants can be invigorated with a simple Epsom salt solution applied before the end of August, according to a horticultural specialist. Elizabeth Waddington from Polytunnel Gardening recommends dissolving Epsom salt in a watering can to naturally boost both plants during the late summer period.
Why Epsom salt helps plants thrive
August is a time when roses and tomatoes are at their strongest but also most vulnerable, as higher humidity levels can create ideal conditions for problems such as black spot and blight. The sweltering heat can also strip soil of essential nutrients, leading to lacklustre blooms and smaller yields.
Epsom salts contain magnesium and sulphur, both important for plant health. Magnesium helps plants absorb phosphorus and supports chlorophyll production, while sulphur is necessary for overall plant metabolism. These nutrients are especially beneficial for tomatoes, peppers, and roses.
How to apply Epsom salt to plants
To use Epsom salt effectively, dissolve one tablespoon per gallon of water in a watering can and apply directly to the plants. Dry crystals are more concentrated and risk over-fertilising and scorching plants during summer, so dilution is safer and more efficient.
Apply the solution to the base of roses and tomatoes, using approximately one litre per plant. Repeat the treatment every four weeks throughout the remainder of the growing season to help both plants flourish and remain vibrant for the duration of summer.
