An inquest has been opened into the death of Declan Sawyer, a 15-year-old who drowned in a Lincoln lake during the May heatwave. His family has called for improved water safety education to prevent similar tragedies.
Incident Details
Declan was reported missing after getting into difficulty at Swanholme Lakes in Lincoln. Emergency services arrived at the scene at approximately 2:30 PM on Sunday, May 24, and launched a search operation. His body was later recovered by an underwater search team and specialist divers.
Family's Tribute and Warning
Declan's father, Carl Sawyer, paid tribute to his son online, describing him as "very much loved." He said: "Our darling boy Declan was a funny and outgoing young man who loved his fishing and his football. He had a very cheeky smile and the personality to match. He was very much loved by his friends and family, and will be missed dearly by many." The family also urged parents, friends, and families to ensure young people are fully aware of the dangers of open water.
Inquest Proceedings
Coroner Paul Smith opened the inquest at the Myle Cross Centre in Lincoln on Thursday, June 25. Police Sergeant Thomas Hardy formally identified Declan's body. A post-mortem examination on Thursday, May 28, recorded drowning as the medical cause of death. The inquest has been adjourned and is scheduled to resume on Monday, November 23.
