Spraying blinds and window sills with a mixture containing fabric softener can keep them dust-free for longer, according to a cleaning expert. The anti-static properties of fabric softener create an invisible barrier that repels dust particles.
Why dust accumulates on blinds
In summer, hot weather reduces humidity, allowing dust to blow into homes more easily. Dry air also generates static electricity, which attracts dust to surfaces like blinds and window sills, making them difficult to keep clean.
Carrie Higgins, a stay-at-home mum and creator of Making Lemonade, shared the tip. She said: “Fabric softener is the secret ingredient in this dust-repelling spray because it creates an invisible, anti-static barrier on blinds, preventing dust from clinging as quickly.”
How the spray works
Fabric softener contains anti-static surfactants, which are designed to prevent clothes from sticking together in the wash. When applied to surfaces, it removes static buildup and leaves a protective coating that repels airborne particles.
White vinegar, another ingredient in the spray, acts as a natural acid that dissolves existing dust. The combination helps keep blinds and window sills cleaner for longer, saving time on household chores.
How to make and use the spray
To make the spray, mix one teaspoon of liquid fabric softener, 120ml of white vinegar, and 240ml of water in a spray bottle. Use a microfibre cloth or a fuzzy cotton sock for cleaning, as these trap fine dust particles effectively.
Close the blinds completely before spraying. Shake the bottle well, spray the solution onto the top blinds, and wipe each slat from top to bottom. For stubborn stains, let the mixture sit for about five minutes before wiping. Dry the blinds with paper towels to finish.
