Ditch Vinegar and Baking Soda: Clear a Blocked Drain in 10 Minutes with Soda Crystals
Clear Blocked Drains in 10 Minutes with Soda Crystals

Household sinks often clog from food and soap buildup, especially in summer when melted ice cream, salad scraps, and grease from burgers are poured down the drain. This creates a thick, greasy layer that can attract flies. However, experts at AC Plumbing say you can clear a blockage in 10 minutes without a plumber or harsh chemicals—using soda crystals.

Why Soda Crystals Work Better Than Vinegar and Baking Soda

Many people try unblocking sinks with white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, a popular social media hack. But according to AC Plumbing, this combination produces a weak fizzy reaction that creates salt and is not strong enough to dissolve grease. Soda crystals, on the other hand, contain sodium carbonate, an alkaline compound that dissolves grease and fatty residues when activated with hot water. Unlike acidic drain cleaners that produce corrosive fumes, soda crystals soften and separate grease bonds through an alkaline reaction.

How to Unblock a Drain with Soda Crystals

If the sink is badly blocked, scoop out standing water so the crystals can reach the pipes. For a mostly clear drain, add two to four tablespoons of soda crystals to the plughole. Boil a full kettle and pour the hot water down the drain to activate the crystals and loosen grease. Leave it for 10 minutes or longer, then rinse with another kettle of boiling water. For stubborn clogs, repeat the process once or twice.
