Brown, crispy lawns damaged by the summer heatwave can be restored to lush green using a common kitchen item: coffee grounds. Rich in nitrogen, coffee grounds act as a natural lawn booster when applied before rainfall, according to gardening experts.
Why coffee grounds work
As GardeningKnowHow.com explains: "It isn’t the caffeine that stimulates healthy grass growth, but rather the nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals that coffee grounds contain. These nutrients are released slowly, which is a big benefit over quick release synthetic fertilisers."
The slow release allows turf to absorb nutrients over a longer period, ensuring stronger grass. Coffee grounds can be sprinkled directly on the lawn, and timing the application with forecast rain avoids wasting water during drought conditions.
Expert backing and benefits
Lilydale Instant Lawn supports the practice: “Coffee grounds are an excellent, eco-friendly way to give your lawn a nutrient boost. They are rich in nitrogen, which is a crucial element for grass growth.”
The company adds that using coffee grounds is beneficial year-round: “Using coffee grounds on your lawn isn’t just a summer activity; it can also be beneficial in winter. The organic material can improve soil health during the dormant season.”
Unlike chemical fertiliser sprays, coffee grounds do not harm wildlife such as worms, moths, butterflies, and birds, making them a safer alternative for gardens.
