A new survey has crowned the 1990s as the favourite decade among nostalgic Brits, with 36% of adults admitting they miss the era that brought us Friends, the Spice Girls, Blockbuster video, and proper nights out.
1990s Tops 1980s in Nostalgia Vote
The decade finished ahead of the 1980s, which garnered 27% of the vote. Key reasons for the 1990s' popularity include the Game Boy handheld console and Saturday morning television programming.
Respondents also felt that going out on the town was more affordable back then and that there was a stronger sense of community.
Rise of Retro Social Activities
The research highlights a surge in retro nights out, with 70% of people yearning for hobbies that help them disconnect from their phones. Nicole Garrett, chief executive of The Bingo Association, which commissioned the survey, commented: “As people look to switch off and reconnect, we’re seeing a revival in traditional social activities like bingo that bring people together in a fun, relaxed setting, with younger generations in particular flocking to bingo clubs in search of shared, real-world experiences.”
She added: “National Bingo Week is the perfect opportunity to get involved, offering a chance to step away from scrolling and enjoy a great night out. Whether you’re a regular or trying it for the first time, it’s all about big laughs, real connections and the thrill of playing together - with the added excitement of a guaranteed £250,000 prize up for grabs on Sunday 28th June.”
Simplicity and Entertainment Drive Nostalgia
The poll of 2,000 Brits found that love for the 1990s was driven by a simpler way of life, better music and entertainment, and less time spent on technology and screens. Meanwhile, 54% said they have recently visited the cinema, and 30% went to an amusement arcade.
Data from bingo clubs reveals that nearly half of new members are under 35, and 70% believe the game is no longer just for older people.
