Best UK City for Raising Kids: Green Spaces and Cheap Homes

Research has identified the best place in the UK to raise a child, taking into account factors such as green spaces, house prices, and childcare costs. Sheffield in South Yorkshire topped the list with a score of 7.32 out of 10.

Why Sheffield is the Best

Sheffield offers double the average amount of green space per person compared to other UK cities. The average house price in Sheffield is £222,000, below the UK average of £270,080 and significantly less than the South East's £379,000. Childcare costs are also lower, at £918.33 per month compared to the UK average of £1,128.

Green Spaces and Family Attractions

Families can enjoy the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, which feature colorful flowers and plants from around the world, as well as Victorian greenhouses. Graves Park offers playgrounds, woodlands, and lakes, while Kelham Island Museum provides an interactive learning experience about the area's industrial heritage.

Second and Third Places

Milton Keynes came second, offering the widest range of child-friendly attractions—31 per 100,000 people—and large amounts of green space. However, childcare costs are higher at £1,416 per month. Swindon ranked third due to the lowest crime rate in the study (68 per 1,000 people) and childcare costs averaging £900 per month, with two-thirds of its schools rated good or outstanding by OFSTED.
