Residents, family members, and colleagues at Greenan Manor Care Home in Doonfoot, Ayrshire, came together for a special bee-themed activity day that culminated in the safe observation of over 12,000 bees. The event, organized by activities coordinator Clara MacKinnon, transformed a simple bee observation activity into a full Bee Day, involving the care home's housekeeping and catering teams.
Beekeeping Expert Phil McAnespie Shares His Passion
Beekeeping expert Phil McAnespie, from Ayr, brought his bees to the Meallmore-operated care home. A former president of the Scottish Beekeepers Association, McAnespie shared his specialist knowledge and insight, allowing residents to see the bees up close without fear of being stung. The highlight of the day was observing the thousands of bees and learning about their life cycle.
Bee-Themed Activities and Decorations
The home was decorated with bee-themed decorations, and the kitchen chef baked bee cupcakes. Residents participated in quizzes, word searches, and puzzles centered around bees. Colleagues dressed as bees for the occasion, and residents joined in with quirky headwear. The favorite activity was seeing the bees and hearing about their life cycle.
Resident Ella said: "The bees were amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the session and would like him to come back again." Resident Sheila added: "It was an interesting day, and I would love to see Phil and the bees come back."
Care Home Manager Praises the Event
Joe Janikowski, care home manager at Greenan Manor, said: "Clara did a fantastic job of turning what was an interesting activity into an entire day of fun and learning. Our residents loved taking part in it all – along with the novelty of seeing so many of the Greenan Manor colleagues dressed up as bees! Phil and his 12,000 bees were undoubtedly the highlight of the day. We were all fascinated to be able to get so close to them without fear of being stung, and we learnt so much from him. Thanks to Phil for coming in to share his passion with us, and to Clara and the full team for making the day so special."
