Simple Apple Storage Trick Keeps Potatoes Fresh for Months
Apple Trick Keeps Potatoes Fresh for Months

Potatoes are one of the most wasted foods in the UK, but experts have shared a simple storage tip that can keep them fresh for months and prevent sprouting. Wheeldon Brothers, specialists in waste management, recommend storing potatoes with an apple to harness the natural ethylene gas emitted by the fruit.

How the Apple Trick Works

The method, which gained popularity on social media, relies on ethylene gas that apples naturally produce. According to Wheeldon Brothers, “Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes.” For best results, they advise keeping potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry environment alongside an apple.

Traditionally, potatoes are stored in cupboards or pantries, but refrigerating them can extend freshness “up to three times longer.” The experts note that earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked, and modern research confirms fridge storage is safe. However, they caution that sprouted or green potatoes should not be eaten as they contain harmful toxins.

Other Storage Tips

To maintain potato quality, remove them from plastic bags, which retain moisture and accelerate deterioration. Regularly check for sprouting or green patches. The same principle applies to bananas: detach each banana from the bunch and wrap stems in cling film to limit ethylene gas travel, keeping them fresher longer. Storing bananas in the fridge at peak ripeness also prolongs shelf life.

By using these simple techniques, households can significantly reduce food waste and enjoy fresh produce for extended periods.
