Allers Allotments held their 2026 open day, drawing a crowd of all ages for a family-friendly afternoon. The event, situated off Barrie Road in Calderwood, showcased the work of local gardeners.
Family Fun and Local Produce
Committee member Lesley Wilson described the open day as “very much a family afternoon out with stalls, tombola and a tearoom.” She noted that “the open day was well attended and the weather kind, only a slight smirr of rain fell on us!”
Wilson added: “The photographs show that everyone enjoyed their day and what a bounty of plot-grown produce there was available for purchase. Also available were preserves of all kinds – jams, pickles and chutneys from produce grown on the plots plus home baking – all made by our very talented plot holders.”
Activities and Community Support
Stonehouse Men’s Shed brought bees and honey, while K-Woodlands provided mini-diggers for children to dig into soil and stone painting. The kids’ activity area featured planting hairy head pots, digging up produce, and face painting.
Wilson expressed gratitude: “A huge ‘thank you’ goes to our plot holders who very generously gave their time, produce and makes for the open day. Without their support the day would not be the success it is. We must also thank local businesses who donated to, not just the tombola and raffle stalls, but also the plant and the soft drinks and cake bar stall – all was very much appreciated and gratefully received.”
