Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh has urged gardeners to plant one particular flower this June to ensure a 'summer of colour'. With so many varieties available, deciding what to add to your outdoor space can be challenging. Fortunately, Titchmarsh has identified an 'easy' flower that delivers vibrant blooms from summer through autumn: Osteospermum, also known as African or Cape daisies.
Why Osteospermum?
Osteospermum is a tender perennial that, in mild gardens such as those by the sea in South-west England, can survive winter. Titchmarsh advises planting them between mid and late May, but June planting will still yield flowers this year, according to Gardeners World. 'You'll get a whole summer of colour from these bright daisies,' he said.
In his Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh video, he featured a yellow osteospermum, but they come in many shades, including dark reds, deep burgundy, and the Tresco Purple variety he loves. Beyond aesthetics, these flowers attract bees and other pollinators, as the central part of the flower offers nectar and pollen. 'That means the plant does more than add colour; it helps bring life and movement into the garden,' Titchmarsh added.
Planting and Care Tips
Gardeners World provides guidance on planting: 'Plant with the top of the root ball level with the soil or compost, firm in and water well after planting.' Regular watering is needed until established. Osteospermums in flower beds require less frequent watering, while those in pots need consistent watering during warm spells. Feed weekly with standard plant fertiliser during the growing period.
The plants are available as seeds, plug plants, or garden-ready specimens. For container-grown osteospermums, bring them indoors during autumn and winter. For border plants, trim them back and apply mulch to protect from cold.
