Aberdeenshire Chippy Invented Deep Fried Mars Bars

The Carron Fish Bar, a family-run chippy in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, is renowned not only for its award-winning fish and chips but also for being the birthplace of the deep fried Mars bar. The takeaway was named Best Seaside Fish and Chips in Scotland at the 2025 Scottish Fish and Chip Awards.

History of the Deep Fried Mars Bar

The story dates back to the 1990s when the shop, then known as the Haven Fish and Chip Bar, created the treat after a bet between local schoolboys John Twaddle and Brian McDonald. Cook Evelyne Balgowan first served it, and McDonald enjoyed it. Word spread, and soon teenagers lined up to try it. By 1995, the Daily Record and international newspapers reported on the craze.
