Four Scents That Drive Spiders Out of Your Home This Mating Season

As spider mating season begins earlier each year due to shifting weather patterns, UK households are seeking effective ways to keep the eight-legged intruders at bay. James Higgins, a flooring specialist at Online Carpets, has identified four scents that spiders 'hate' and can be used as natural repellents.

Cinnamon, mint, lavender and lemon are the key fragrances that deter spiders. Higgins suggests placing cinnamon sticks or scented candles around the home to create a cosy atmosphere while repelling spiders. For a greener approach, potted lavender or mint plants on windowsills can prevent spiders from entering.

Citrus scents, particularly lemon, offer a cheap solution. Placing lemon peels on windowsills, skirting boards or shelves can keep spiders away and leave rooms smelling fresh. For a quick fix, Higgins recommends mixing 20 drops of essential oil (lemon, peppermint or lavender) with water in a spray bottle and applying it to corners and crevices.

Another DIY deterrent involves a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and warm water, with a few drops of essential oil added. This mixture can be used to clean laminate or vinyl flooring in kitchens and bathrooms, which are spider hotspots.

Beyond scents, maintaining a clean home is crucial. Higgins advises sealing gaps in walls, pipes, windows and doors to block entry points. Regular dusting, vacuuming, and decluttering remove hiding places, while keeping bins closed and away from windows reduces insect prey that attract spiders.
