£1.50 Limescale Remover Spray for Shower Screens

Cleaning enthusiasts have revealed their favourite product for tackling stubborn limescale and hard water marks on shower screens: Viakal, a limescale remover spray available at Home Bargains for approximately £1.50.

Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Lisa Evans asked for advice: "I'm struggling with water marks and limescale on my shower screens. My parents used to have a spray that worked great, but I can't remember what it was. Any ideas?"

Over 80 people commented with suggestions, and Viakal was the most frequently recommended product.

Viakal: The Top Recommendation

Annika Karrison said: "Viakal is the best. Forget everything else. I squirt a line across the top of my shower door and a line across the centre." She advised wearing gloves and using a damp cloth to wipe the product over the entire door, then rinsing it off, starting with the first panel. "Very satisfying to see the difference. I do this in my client homes, and it always looks great."

Sami Hill wrote: "I use Viakal with a dry cloth, it's amazing." Julie Raine and Ruth Hudson also recommended Viakal, calling it the best for limescale. Gwyneth Calderbank explained she applies Viakal before stepping into the shower, then rinses it off while showering, achieving "perfect results".

How to Use Viakal Safely

Viakal is a limescale remover and anti-watermark spray designed for bathrooms. It can be applied to chrome, stainless steel, ceramic, tiles, and plastic, though with care. The product should not be left on any surface for an extended period, and adequate ventilation is recommended during use.

Other responses suggested white vinegar, but Lisa said she didn't like the scent, so she preferred to stick to commercial products.

Preventing Limescale Build-Up

Shower screens are predominantly affected by hard water deposits, commonly referred to as limescale. Soap scum can also be responsible if shower screens aren't maintained regularly. These can actually etch into the glass surface, causing it to appear perpetually dirty, even following cleaning. Consistent cleaning, or simply wiping down with a squeegee after every shower, helps prevent accumulation and maintain a clean shower.
