Who Is Tommy Robinson?

Tommy Robinson, whose legal name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is a 43-year-old far-right political activist known for his anti-Islamic rhetoric. He adopted the alias from a Luton Town football hooligan to conceal his identity and prior criminal record. Robinson is a father of three and has been a central figure in far-right demonstrations, including the “Unite the Kingdom” march in London last year.

How Did He Rise to Prominence?

Robinson entered activism after losing his job as an engineering apprentice. The dismissal followed an assault on a police officer who intervened during a street fight between Robinson and his girlfriend. In 2009, he founded the Islamophobic English Defence League (EDL), which organized rallies across the UK. He was convicted of assault again in 2011 for head-butting a man at a Birmingham demonstration. After leaving the EDL, Robinson rebranded as an independent journalist for Rebel News, a conspiracy theory outlet, focusing on sexual grooming gangs and repeating claims that Muslims had been “terrorising our country for decades.”

What Are His Convictions?

Robinson has accumulated multiple convictions for violence, public order offences, financial fraud, immigration fraud, stalking, harassment of journalists, and contempt of court. In 2024, he was jailed for repeating false claims about a 15-year-old Syrian refugee, violating a court injunction. He has also declared bankruptcy.

What Are His Political Views?

Robinson’s platform is explicitly Islamophobic. He has called for Muslims to be removed from Britain, described them as “filthy scumbags,” and urged people to “make war” on Islam. His rhetoric often implies violence without direct incitement. After the 2025 Southport stabbings, where three girls were killed and ten injured, Robinson falsely claimed the attacker was a Muslim asylum seeker; the suspect was actually British-born and not Muslim. He uses coded language like “native” for white people and “invader” for non-white populations, and promotes “remigration,” a white supremacist policy to remove non-white citizens from European countries. He once owned a tanning salon.

Who Are His Connections?

Despite presenting himself as a working-class representative of “real Britain,” Robinson has worked as an adviser to populist UKIP MEP Gerard Batten and has been funded by billionaires for Rebel News. He has appeared at rallies with Elon Musk and was hosted by the Trump administration in early 2026 after being denied a US visa for attempting entry with a false passport. He has also been hosted by the Israeli government, angering neo-Nazi supporters, and is a vocal supporter of Russia, including its invasion of Ukraine. In 2020, he toured Russia claiming to be a victim of Western censorship. Nigel Farage has said Robinson would not be welcome in his party, and Boris Johnson called him a “far-right thug.”

Why Did the Interview Cause Trouble?

Karl Stefanovic’s interview with Robinson provided nearly an hour of unchallenged airtime, allowing Robinson to repeat falsehoods for which he had been found in contempt of court. Stefanovic did not rebut Robinson’s claims and even praised his “tenacity and courage.” Robinson also commented on Australian politics, expressing admiration for Pauline Hanson, who he said had defended him. The fallout has led Nine Entertainment to likely sever ties with Stefanovic, who will not appear on a radio show with Eddie McGuire.
