The Ootsider, a West Lothian-based social enterprise that produces all-weather coats, has received a four-figure anonymous donation to manufacture and distribute 25 sleeping coats to homeless individuals in Glasgow.
Background of The Ootsider
Founded by John Keogh in 2022, the company creates customised outdoor coats and changing robes popular with wild swimmers, campers, equestrian enthusiasts, and hill walkers. The coats convert from a coat and bag during the day into a sleeping bag at night, keeping wearers warm and dry in harsh conditions. The range now includes wheelchair coats and specialist jackets for people with Parkinson's disease.
Social Mission and Impact
As a Community Interest Company (CIC), The Ootsider reinvests profits from sales into producing and donating sleeping coats to homeless and rough sleepers across the UK. To date, over 400 coats have been given free of charge to those in need. The recent £4,000 donation will fund an additional 25 coats for distribution in Glasgow.

John Keogh, chief executive of The Ootsider, expressed gratitude: “There is more and more pressure being put on temporary accommodation and night shelters in Glasgow. As the homelessness crisis continues to grow in the city, it’s important to know there are incredible people out there. Many of these people do good but want absolutely no recognition for it. They do it because it’s the right thing to do. We were honoured to be approached to supply our sleeping coats to help rough sleepers. It’s an incredible and humbling gesture.”
Manufacturing Details
The coats will be produced at the company's new manufacturing base in Pumpherston, having previously been made in Dumfries.
