The RSPCA has shared advice for holidaymakers who encounter stray cats abroad, urging them to assess the animal's condition before intervening.
Check for signs of care
In a Facebook post, the charity explained that not all street cats need help. It advised checking if the cat looks underfed or unwell, or if it appears well-fed. An ear clip indicates the cat has been caught, neutered, and released as part of a trap-neuter-return programme.
Local support and donations
The RSPCA suggested speaking to local people who may know of organisations or individuals caring for the cats. Some resorts or gift shops sell cat food for tourists to feed strays. Donations can also support treatment or neutering programmes.
Contact tourism boards
Holidaymakers can write to tourism boards or local officials, expressing concern about the number of stray cats and urging investment in animal welfare. The RSPCA encouraged sharing the advice and directing people to International Cat Care for more information.
