Raploch is edging closer to its goal of creating a lasting war memorial, as volunteers launch a final funding push. The project, led by Mick Lowe and John Murie alongside a local committee, has already raised £28,000 through community fundraising and grants.
Research Uncovers Local Heroes
After years of research, Mick and John have documented the men and women from Raploch who served in wartime, including over 80 servicemen killed in action, 49 prisoners of war, nine wounded, and just 29 who returned safely. The planned memorial aims to honour these individuals for future generations.
Community Support and Events
Local businesses have donated prizes such as hotel vouchers and a family ticket to Edinburgh Zoo. However, the committee still needs £10,000 to complete the memorial and produce accompanying books of remembrance. Fundraising includes a GoFundMe page, bingo night, tombolas, table-top sales, quiz night, and concerts.
Mick Lowe and John Murie said: “Our village played its part in the wars that helped shape the world we live in today. We owe it to those brave men and women to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten. This memorial is not just for the past, it is for the future generations, so they can understand the price that was paid for freedoms we enjoy today.”
The completed memorial will display the names of Raploch’s servicemen, including John Nisbet Anderson, Malcolm McPhee McCall, Charles Gordon, David Goldie, James Wingate, Archibald Mills, Joseph Wallace Penmen, Robert Brewster, John Lyon, Alexander Hamilton, John Higgins, Henry Hunter, Edward Inches Upfold, Mathew Lamb, and Robert Currie.
